Every year, right after the big shopping days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, people around the world take a day to give back. That day is Giving Tuesday. In 2026, Giving Tuesday falls on Tuesday, December 1.
So what is Giving Tuesday, and how does it work in Canada? This guide answers those questions in plain language. It also explains how to choose a charity you can trust, and why food banks need extra support as winter sets in.
We also share how Muslim Food Bank & Community Services (MFBCS) takes part, and how your gift helps families across Canada receive halal food with dignity.
What Is Giving Tuesday?
Giving Tuesday is a global day of generosity. It started in the United States as a response to the holiday shopping rush. It has since grown into a movement in many countries, including Canada.
The idea is simple. After days focused on buying, we spend one day focused on giving. People donate to charities, volunteer their time, help a neighbour, or spread the word about a cause they care about. Every act of kindness counts, big or small.
No single charity owns Giving Tuesday. Organizations of every size take part. Each one runs its own campaign and asks its own community for support.
When Is Giving Tuesday 2026?
Giving Tuesday 2026 is on Tuesday, December 1, 2026. It always falls on the Tuesday after American Thanksgiving, which makes it the day after Cyber Monday.
- Black Friday: Friday, November 27, 2026
- Cyber Monday: Monday, November 30, 2026
- Giving Tuesday: Tuesday, December 1, 2026
Many charities start sharing their campaigns a week or two before the day. Because Giving Tuesday comes before December 31, a gift made that day counts toward your tax receipts for the same year.
How Giving Tuesday Works in Canada
In Canada, GivingTuesday is now run through CanadaHelps, a Canadian charity that helps people donate online. CanadaHelps shares resources with charities and donors and helps people find causes to support across the country.
Canadian charities take part in their own way. Some run online campaigns with a fundraising goal. Others hold volunteer days, food drives or community events. Many ask supporters to share the campaign with friends and family, because Giving Tuesday spreads best by word of mouth.
You can give to any registered charity you choose. When you give to a registered charity, you can receive an official donation receipt to use at tax time.
How to Choose a Charity on Giving Tuesday
Your inbox may fill up with requests in late November. A few simple checks can help you give with confidence.
Check the CRA Registration Number
Every registered charity in Canada has a registration number from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). You can confirm it using the CRA’s charity search. The CRA explains how on its What to know before you give page. Our charity registration number is 800720864RR0001.
Make Sure You Get a Tax Receipt
Registered charities can issue official donation receipts. Keep them, because you need them to claim the charitable donation tax credit. Our guide to Giving Tuesday tax receipts in Canada explains the basics.
See Where the Money Goes
A good charity tells you clearly what your gift does. Look for plain facts about its programs, who it serves and where it works. If something is unclear, contact the charity and ask. You can learn about our programs on our How We Help page.
Choose a Cause Close to Your Heart
Think about what matters most to you. It might be hunger in your own city, support for newcomers, or care for seniors. Giving to a cause you believe in makes it easier to keep giving year after year.

Why Food Banks Need Support in Winter
Winter is a hard season for many families. Heating bills go up. Children are home for the holidays. Some work slows down in the colder months. For a family that is already stretched, these costs can mean choosing between food and rent.
Food banks feel this pressure too. Giving Tuesday comes at the right time to help fill shelves before the coldest weeks of the year.
At Muslim Food Bank & Community Services, we provide more than 21,225 food hampers a year and support more than 3,500 families at locations across Canada. Every hamper is halal. Every person is served with dignity, regardless of faith. This Giving Tuesday, our goal is to raise $100,000 CAD to keep that support going.
Ways to Take Part in Giving Tuesday
You do not need to give a large amount to make a difference. Here are a few simple ways to join in.
