The Significance of Muharram

Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic year. It is one of the sacred months and is often known as the Month of Allah. It is a time for prayer, fasting, charity, reflection, and renewing your commitment to good deeds.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “The most virtuous fasting after Ramadan is in Allah’s month, Al-Muharram.” This makes Muharram a meaningful time to begin the year with worship and generosity. Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, is also a day of remembrance, fasting, and reflection. Muharram 1448 is expected to begin around June 16, 2026, and Ashura is expected around June 25, 2026, subject to moon sighting.

How Do Muslims Observe Muharram?

Muharram is a time of deep spiritual connection and remembrance. Common practices include:

Begin With Intention

Muharram is a sacred time to start the Islamic New Year with worship, reflection, and sincere giving.

  • Renew your intention for the year ahead
  • Increase prayer, Qur’an, dhikr, and reflection
  • Give charity as a source of mercy and protection

Remember Ashura

Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, is a day connected to fasting, remembrance, sacrifice, and justice.

  • Fast on Ashura if you are able
  • Reflect on the lessons of Prophet Musa and Imam Husayn
  • Use the day to seek forgiveness and strengthen your faith

Give With Mercy

Charity in Muharram helps turn reflection into action by supporting families facing hunger and hardship.

  • Help provide food, care, and essential support
  • Give Sadaqah on behalf of yourself or a loved one
  • Support vulnerable families with dignity at the start of the year

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
"Charity extinguishes sins just as water extinguishes fire."
— [Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Hadith 614]

And in another narration:
"Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity."
— [Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 589]

As we will enter Muharram soon, let us seek Allah’s mercy through prayer, fasting, reflection, and charity. Your giving helps families receive food and support with dignity.
