The Significance of Muharram

Muharram is often referred to as “The Month of Allah”, a title given in Hadith, and no other month has been honored this way.

The Qur’an reminds us of the importance of the sacred month of Allah — Al-Muharram. It is a time for prayer, fasting, charity and reflection on values like faith, sacrifice and justice. Giving in charity is one of the easiest and most powerful ways to protect ourselves from trials.

“The most virtuous fasting after Ramadan is in Allah’s month of Al-Muharram.”
— Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) [Hadith – Muslim, Tirmidhi]

How Do Muslims Observe Muharram?

Muharram is a time of deep spiritual connection and remembrance. Common practices include:

Voluntary fasting

Reading Qur’an and offering extra prayers

Making dhikr (remembrance of Allah)

Giving charity (sadaqah)

Reflecting on values like faith, sacrifice, and justice.

On the 10th day (Ashura), many Muslims remember Imam Husayn, the Prophet’s grandson, who stood for justice and was martyred at Karbala.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
"Charity extinguishes sins just as water extinguishes fire."
— [Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Hadith 614]

And in another narration:
"Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity."
— [Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 589]

As we enter this sacred month, let us seek Allah’s mercy and blessings by helping those in need and supporting our community.
