The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “He is not a believer whose stomach is filled while his neighbour goes hungry.”

Food insecurity is the biggest challenge that our community is facing, making it even more important to all of us to come together and end hunger. We strongly believe that access to good quality food for all is possible, and essential for a thriving society and here is how we are nourishing our community through dedicated and unified actions. During Ramadan, Muslim Food Bank is continuing its work in Canada, making sure your Ramadan charity and donations get to those who need them most.

YEMEN

Yemen is one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises with more than 31 million people in need of assistance according to United Nations. Children account for more than 12 million of those needing assistance. Hunger poses the most significant challenge. Most of the children are still undernourished.

Regrettably, there hasn’t been any extensive coverage of this crisis. Many Yemenis are experiencing food insecurity (hunger) and millions are at risk of famine. The people of Yemen are subject to the turbulent conditions in the region. Internal conflict and military actions have created a state of disorder and chaos. The Yemeni people suffer from a lack of basic items and necessary medical supplies. This has been going on for years and unfortunately, there is no end in sight.

FIJI

It is estimated that over 35% of Fiji’s population is below the national poverty line. With the income of households drastically declining, thousands of families do not have the proper resources to thrive.

Fiji children are also heavily impacted, further contributing to the increased rate of hunger in Fiji. It has been recently estimated that over 40% of Fiji’s children are malnourished. A majority of children in Fiji suffer from “protein-energy malnutrition”, meaning that they do not consume enough vital and nutritious foods for their bodies. (Ref: The Borgen Project)

KENYA

Kenya, with a population of 48 million people, is densely populated and possesses great human capital. However, around a third of the population lives on less than $1.90 a day, making life increasingly challenging for locals. Droughts, which are becoming more common, are particularly problematic, and conflict and disease outbreaks exacerbate the situation. Hunger poses the most significant challenge.

The economy is heavily reliant on agriculture, and poor rainy seasons have had a staggering impact on crops and livestock. Over 3.4 million people are now acutely food insecure (hungry), facing an uncertain future.

Food insecurity (hunger), reduced pasture and water, and limited fodder have led to increased workloads for children and women, taking an immense toll on the local population. Malnutrition is the biggest cause of death among children under the age of five, with 369,000 of them suffering from acute malnutrition. For people across Kenya, life is incredibly challenging.

Unemployment stands at 11% (ILO, 2017), and 1 in 20 children do not reach their fifth birthday (World Bank/UNICEF, 2016-17). Furthermore, 1 in 3 children suffer from stunting (UNICEF, 2013), and over 20% of adults are illiterate (UNESCO, 2014).

Muslim Food Bank started distribution of food hampers in the coastal region of Kenya this year. Our local team in Kenya identified the families in need and provided food hampers on a monthly basis.

Please donate generously to assist the families struggling with Food Insecurity.
