Muslims around the globe revive the spirit of sacrifice on the twelfth and the final Islamic month; Duh al-Hijjah. The word Duh al-Hijjah means “Pilgrimage Month” or “Processor of the Pilgrimage.” Muslims from all around the world visit Makkah this month to undertake Hajj to fulfil the fifth pillar of Islam. Not only this but also the festival of Sacrifice – Eid ul Adha is celebrated in this month which serves as a reminder to mankind that their purpose on the earth is to fulfill Allah’s commands and to sacrifice their belongings in His way. The blessed month of Duh al-Hijah holds immense importance for Muslims as the Holy Prophet (PBUH) said:
“There are no days more beloved to Allah that He be worshipped in them than the ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah, fasting every day of them is equivalent to fasting a year; and standing every night of them (in Salat) is equivalent to standing on the Night of Qadr.”

In Arabic, the word Qurbani denotes sacrifice. It also alludes to animal sacrifices to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) devotion to Allah (SWT) and willingness to sacrifice his most prized possessions in the sake of faith. It is also known as Udhiya, and it is the sacrificing of a livestock animal during the Eid ul-Adha holiday, which takes place between the 10th and 12th of Dhul Hijjah, the Islamic calendar’s last month.
Muslims commemorate Qurbani every year to remember this humble act of complete and utter devotion to Allah (SWT), in which hundreds of millions of Muslims conduct Qurbani in remembrance of Ibrahim’s sacrifice.
The meat from the slaughtered livestock is divided into three equal portions: one for the person performing Qurbani, one for the family who provided the animal , and one for the poor and needy.
There are also verses of the Quran and Hadith that emphasize the virtue and significance of Qurbani:
“Say, Indeed, my prayer, my rights of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds.” (Al-‘An’am 6/162)
The Holy Prophet PBUH said
“There is no dearer deed of Ibne Adam in the days of Qurbani than flowing the blood (doing Qurbani) and that animal will come with his horns, hairs, and hooves on the day of Qayamt. The blood of the Qurbani reaches the stage of acceptance before it reaches the floor.” (Tirmizi, Ibnu Majah)
