In Islam, intention (niyyah) holds great significance. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said,
“Actions are judged by intentions, and every person will have only what they intended” (Bukhari & Muslim).
This hadith emphasizes that sincere intentions are rewarded, even if a person is unable to complete the intended act due to unavoidable circumstances.
The Reward for Intending to Perform Hajj
Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, and for those who sincerely plan and prepare to undertake this sacred journey but are prevented by circumstances beyond their control, Allah’s mercy ensures that their efforts do not go unrewarded. Scholars agree that if someone had the genuine intention to perform Hajj, made necessary preparations, and was later unable to go due to valid reasons such as financial constraints, health issues, or travel restrictions, they are still rewarded for their sincere efforts.
Examples from the Sunnah
There are instances from the life of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his companions that highlight the reward of intention. In one instance, the Prophet mentioned those who were unable to accompany the Muslim army due to valid excuses: “There are people in Madinah who, whenever you traveled any distance or crossed any valley, were with you in reward.” When the companions asked how this was possible, the Prophet (peace be upon him) explained, “They were held back by a legitimate excuse.” (Bukhari)
Similarly, those who are prevented from performing Hajj despite their sincere intention may hope for Allah’s mercy and reward.
Making the Most of Your Intention
Even if one cannot perform Hajj, there are other ways to gain immense reward:
- Supplication and Repentance – Continue making dua that Allah grants you the opportunity to perform Hajj in the future.
- Charity and Good Deeds – Engaging in charitable acts, such as helping others perform Hajj or supporting the needy, earns great rewards.
- Fasting on the Day of Arafah – The Prophet (peace be upon him) stated that fasting on this day expiates sins of the past and coming year (Muslim).
- Increasing Worship During Dhul-Hijjah – The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are among the most sacred; increasing prayers, dhikr, and Quran recitation can bring immense blessings.
Final Thoughts
If you sincerely intended to perform Hajj but were unable to go due to circumstances beyond your control, trust in Allah’s wisdom and mercy. Your intention alone carries immense weight, and Allah, in His infinite mercy, rewards His servants for their genuine efforts. Keep your hope alive, continue seeking opportunities to perform Hajj, and engage in righteous deeds in the meantime.
May Allah accept our intentions and grant us the opportunity to fulfill our religious obligations in the best manner. Ameen.
